Description
Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in September 1888 on the Place du Forum, Café Terrace at Night was the first picture in which Van Gogh set a sky full of stars over a scene of everyday life. The café’s gas-lit awning glows a warm gold across the cobblestones while the night above turns deep blue and silver, and, remarkably, he painted the whole thing outdoors, at night, on the spot. He was thrilled to be painting the dark ‘without any black’, using warm and cool colour alone.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the glowing yellow terrace, star-flecked sky and warm-cool contrast keep the magic of the original.
Why this night scene lifts a room
Warm, romantic and instantly recognisable, it brings atmosphere to a living room, a dining room, a hallway or a bedroom, and its gold-and-blue palette flatters both cosy and contemporary interiors.
