Description
Van Gogh’s The Night Café, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, The Night Café shows the all-night Café de la Gare where Van Gogh lodged. He deliberately clashed blood-red walls against a green ceiling to express, in his words, ‘the terrible passions of humanity’, a place where one could ruin oneself. A billiard table sits under haloed lamps, the floor tilts, and the colour blazes. It is one of his most daring experiments in using colour to convey emotion.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the charged reds and greens and the glowing lamplight keep the intensity of the original.
Where a bold interior works
Dramatic and full of character, it makes a statement in a living room, a bar area, a dining room or a study, and pairs well with warm woods and rich, confident interiors.
