Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this affectionate portrait shows Van Gogh’s mother, Anna Cornelia. Working from a black-and-white photograph, he gave her warm, living colour, a green ground, rose and ochre in her face, wanting, as he wrote, to paint her ‘in colour’ from memory and love rather than mere likeness.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the warm colour and tender expression keep the feeling of the original.
Where a warm portrait belongs
An affectionate portrait suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
