Description
Van Gogh’s La Mousmé, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, La Mousmé portrays a young girl of about twelve seated in a wooden chair, an oleander sprig in her hand. Van Gogh borrowed the word ‘mousmé’ from a novel about Japan for a girl of that age, and painted her with the bold colour and clear outline he loved in Japanese prints, her striped and polka-dotted dress set against a soft ground. He was delighted with it.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bold pattern and fresh colour keep the charm of the original.
Where a bright portrait belongs
Fresh and characterful, it suits a living room, a study, a hallway or a girl’s room, and works well against plain, warm walls.
