Description
Van Gogh’s Chair, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles late in 1888, Van Gogh’s Chair shows his own simple wooden chair, a pipe and pouch of tobacco resting on the rush seat, standing on a red-tiled floor. He painted it as a kind of portrait-without-a-figure, the plain, honest chair standing for himself, as a companion to the grander chair he painted for Gauguin. Bright yellow and utterly direct, it is one of his most loved images.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bright yellow, red floor and simple form keep the character of the original.
Where this iconic chair belongs
Cheerful and instantly recognisable, it suits a living room, a study, a hallway or a bedroom, and pairs happily with wood and warm light.
