Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Eugene Boch, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this portrait of the Belgian poet-painter Eugène Boch was one Van Gogh called simply The Poet. He set Boch’s fine, thoughtful face against a deep blue ground scattered with stars, wanting, as he wrote, to paint a dreamer ‘against a background of the rich blue of the night’. It is one of his most poetic and idealised portraits.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the starry blue and thoughtful face keep the feeling of the original.
Where a poetic portrait belongs
Dreamy and striking, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works best against plain, warm walls.
