Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Lieutenant Milliet, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this portrait shows Paul-Eugène Milliet, a second lieutenant of the Zouaves and a friend of Van Gogh, in his blue-and-red uniform with a crescent-and-star badge. Van Gogh called the picture The Lover for the handsome young officer’s easy way with women, and set him boldly against a vivid green ground, a confident, colourful character study.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bold uniform and vivid green keep the character of the original.
Where a bold portrait belongs
Colourful and confident, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
