Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait Dedicated to Gauguin, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, this powerful self-portrait was made as a gift and exchange with Paul Gauguin before the two artists lived together in the Yellow House. Van Gogh gave himself a shaved head and slightly slanted eyes, casting himself as a Japanese Buddhist monk, or bonze, against a pale malachite-green ground, a striking image of the artist as a devoted seeker.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the pale green ground and intense gaze keep the power of the original.
Where a striking self-portrait belongs
Bold and iconic, it commands a study, a living room or a hallway, and works best against plain, warm walls.
