Description
Van Gogh’s Paul Gauguin’s Armchair, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles late in 1888, Gauguin’s Chair is the grander companion to Van Gogh’s picture of his own plain chair. It shows the curved armchair Van Gogh bought for Gauguin, lit at night by a candle and a gas lamp, with two novels on the seat, a portrait of the absent friend through his empty chair. Painted in deep reds and greens, it is quietly charged with feeling.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the lamplit chair and rich colour keep the mood of the original.
