Description
Van Gogh’s Still Life with a Plate of Onions, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in January 1889 as he recovered from his breakdown, this warm still life gathers the things of his own recovery on a table: a plate of sprouting onions, a candle, his pipe and tobacco, a health manual and a letter from his brother Theo. Set against a fresh green ground, it is a quietly hopeful picture of a man putting his life back together, a self-portrait told through objects.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the warm objects and fresh ground keep the feeling of the original.
Where a warm still life belongs
Homely and characterful, it suits a kitchen, a dining room or a study, and pairs well with wood and warm light.
