Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of Madame Trabuc, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this portrait shows Madame Trabuc, wife of the head attendant at the asylum where Van Gogh stayed. He shows the older woman in a dark dress against a soft ground, her lined face calm and dignified, painted in quiet, restrained colour. It is a sympathetic, human portrait of one of the few people who cared for him during his difficult year.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the quiet colour and dignified face keep the feeling of the original.
Where a quiet portrait belongs
Calm and dignified, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
