Description
Van Gogh’s Wheatfield under Thunderclouds, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Auvers-sur-Oise in July 1890, in the last weeks of his life, Wheatfield under Thunderclouds is one of the great double-square landscapes of his final days. A vast plain of green and gold wheat stretches under a low, heavy sky of blue-grey thunderclouds, painted in rapid, sweeping strokes. Van Gogh wrote of trying to express ‘sadness and extreme loneliness’ in these wide skies, and also health and calm in the country.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the sweeping plain and heavy sky keep the power of the original.
Where a sweeping landscape belongs
Wide and atmospheric, it anchors a living room, a study or above a sofa, and pairs beautifully with cool tones, wood and considered interiors.
