Description
Van Gogh’s Bridge in the Rain, after Hiroshige, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this is Van Gogh’s bold oil copy of a famous woodblock print by Hiroshige: tiny figures hurry across a wooden bridge under sheets of slanting rain, the whole framed by borders of Japanese characters. Van Gogh adored Japanese prints and copied several to master their flat colour, daring angle and graphic rain, a vivid tribute to the art that transformed his own.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bridge, slanting rain and bold borders keep the impact of the original.
Where a bold Japonaiserie belongs
Striking and graphic, it suits a living room, a study, an art room or a hallway, and works well against plain walls.
