Description
Van Gogh’s Congregation Leaving the Church at Nuenen, hand-painted in oil
Painted in 1884, this quiet scene shows villagers in dark winter clothes leaving the small Reformed church at Nuenen where Van Gogh’s father was the pastor. He painted it for his mother while she recovered from a broken leg, and later reworked the figures. Worked in the sombre browns and greys of his Dutch period, it is a tender, personal record of his family’s world.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the little church and winter figures keep the mood of the original.
Where an atmospheric scene belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
