Description
Van Gogh’s Study for The Potato Eaters, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this is one of the oil studies Van Gogh made working toward his masterpiece The Potato Eaters. Peasants gather around a single lamp to share a plate of potatoes, their weathered hands and faces roughed in with quick, vigorous strokes in deep earthy browns. Looser and more immediate than the finished picture, it shows the great work taking shape.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the lamplit figures and earthy colour keep the power of the original.
Where a grounded scene belongs
Grave and moving, it suits a dining room, a study or a library, and pairs beautifully with warm woods and low lighting.
