Description
Van Gogh’s Portrait of an Old Woman, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows the deeply lined face of an old country woman in a white peasant cap, emerging from a dark ground. One of the many heads Van Gogh painted of the people around him, it catches a whole life of hard work in the weathered features, modelled with honesty and sympathy in the earthy tones of his Dutch period.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the lined face and white cap keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
