Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Man, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this is one of the many head studies Van Gogh made of the country people around him in the run-up to The Potato Eaters. A man’s weathered, bearded face emerges from a dark ground, modelled in deep browns with unflinching honesty. Van Gogh wanted these studies to show real, hard-lived character, sombre, strong and full of feeling.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the dark ground and honest face keep the strength of the original.
Where a powerful head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against darker or neutral walls.
