Description
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Straw Hat and Pipe, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this bright self-portrait shows Van Gogh in a yellow straw hat with a pipe clenched in his teeth, his face and the background built from small, separate strokes of blue, orange and green. Unable to afford models, he used his own reflection to master the vibrating colour of Neo-Impressionism, direct, fresh and full of the light of his Paris years.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the straw hat, pipe and dotted colour keep the character of the original.
Where a bright self-portrait belongs
Fresh and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
