Description
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Pipe, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1886, this is one of the earliest of Van Gogh’s many self-portraits. His bearded face, a pipe at his lips, emerges from a dark ground in the muted browns and greys he brought from Holland, just before the Impressionists brightened his palette. It is a quiet, searching image of the artist at the start of his transformation in the city.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the pipe and muted colour keep the character of the original.
Where a self-portrait belongs
Quiet and characterful, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works well against plain, warm walls.
