Description
Van Gogh’s The De Ruijterkade in Amsterdam, hand-painted in oil
Painted quickly in 1885 on a visit to Amsterdam to see its museums, this small cityscape looks along the De Ruijterkade quay by the harbour, with figures, carts and moored boats under a soft grey sky. Van Gogh sketched it directly and rapidly in cool, atmospheric tones, a fresh, on-the-spot impression of the working waterfront of the Dutch capital.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the busy quay and grey light keep the mood of the original.
Where a harbour scene belongs
Its cool, atmospheric tones suit a study, a living room or a hallway, and pair well with neutral walls, wood and soft light.
