Description
Van Gogh’s Study of a Horse, hand-painted in oil
Painted around 1886, this is one of the studies Van Gogh made from a plaster model of a horse while training his hand, most likely in the Paris studio of Fernand Cormon. The little rearing horse is caught in warm greys and ochres against a shadowed ground, its form studied with careful attention to light and movement, an academic exercise from the months before his own style took flight.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the plaster horse and dark ground keep the character of the original.
Where a study belongs
Restrained and sculptural, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral walls.
