Description
Van Gogh’s Plaster Cast Study, hand-painted in oil
Painted around 1886, this is one of the studies of classical plaster casts Van Gogh made to train his hand, most likely in the Paris studio of Fernand Cormon. A muscular plaster torso is modelled from a shadowed ground in warm greys and ochres, its classical form caught with careful attention to light. These academic exercises show him mastering the discipline of drawing and modelling before his own style emerged.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the pale plaster and dark ground keep the character of the original.
Where a classical study belongs
Restrained and sculptural, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered modern interior, and works well against neutral walls.
