Description
Van Gogh’s Anatomical Study, hand-painted in oil
Painted around 1886, this is one of the anatomical studies Van Gogh made from an ecorche, a model showing the muscles of the body, while training his hand, most likely in the Paris studio of Fernand Cormon. The kneeling figure is caught in warm greys and ochres against a shadowed ground, drawn with careful attention to the structure beneath the skin. These exercises grounded his understanding of the human form.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the sculptural figure and dark ground keep the character of the original.
Where a study belongs
Restrained and sculptural, it suits a study, an art room or a considered modern interior, and works well against neutral walls.
