Painted in 1887, Boulevard de Clichy looks down one of the wide Paris boulevards near where Van Gogh lived, its pavements busy with tiny figures beneath bare winter trees, shopfronts and a pale, luminous sky. Painted in fresh, dabbed strokes of light colour, it is one of his brightest cityscapes, airy, modern and full of the movement of the street.
