Description
Van Gogh’s The Courtesan, after Eisen, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, The Courtesan is Van Gogh’s bold oil version of a Japanese print by Keisai Eisen, which he saw on the cover of a magazine. A courtesan in an elaborate patterned kimono stands against a brilliant yellow ground, framed by a border of bamboo, water and cranes he invented himself. Van Gogh adored Japanese prints, and this vivid, decorative tribute is one of his most striking Japonaiseries.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the patterned robe, yellow ground and bold border keep the impact of the original.
Where a bold Japonaiserie belongs
Striking and decorative, it suits a living room, a study, an art room or a hallway, and works well against plain walls that let its colour sing.
