Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Pipe and Straw Hat, hand-painted in oil

Painted in Paris in 1887, this bright self-portrait shows Van Gogh in a light straw hat, a pipe at his lips, his face and the background built from small, separate strokes of blue, orange and green on a warm ground. One of the many he made in the city, it captures him mastering the vibrating, dotted colour of Neo-Impressionism, fresh, direct and full of summer light.
