Description
Van Gogh’s The Sheepshearer, after Millet, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889-90, The Sheepshearer is one of the series of ‘translations’ Van Gogh made after prints by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he revered above all others. He kept Millet’s composition, a woman shearing a sheep by a sunlit doorway, but reworked it entirely in his own warm, glowing colour and rolling brushwork, treating the copies not as imitations but as heartfelt versions in a new key, made to keep himself company through his year at the asylum.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the peasant figure and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.
Where a peasant scene belongs
Grounded and warm, it suits a study, a living room, a dining room or a hallway, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm light.
