Description

Van Gogh’s The Thresher, after Millet, hand-painted in oil

Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889-90, The Thresher is one of the series of ‘translations’ Van Gogh made after prints by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he revered above all others. He kept Millet’s composition, a peasant threshing grain in a barn, but reworked it entirely in his own warm, glowing colour and rolling brushwork, treating the copies not as imitations but as heartfelt versions in a new key, made to keep himself company through his year at the asylum.

Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the peasant figure and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.

Where a peasant scene belongs

Grounded and warm, it suits a study, a living room, a dining room or a hallway, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm light.

Choose a hand-painted oil or a fine-art print

Order it as a hand-painted oil for genuine brushwork and impasto relief, finished by an experienced painter and made to order, or as an archival fine-art print for a smooth, even finish at a lower price. Select your size, orientation and framing above; every piece is prepared to your exact specification and inspected before it ships.

The craft

The oil edition of this Van Gogh artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Van Gogh's own composition, or is it based on someone else's work?

The composition is Millet's. Van Gogh kept the pose and setting from a print by Jean-Francois Millet, the painter of peasant life he admired above all, then reworked it entirely in his own colour and brushwork at Saint-Remy in 1889-90.

Why did Van Gogh paint a version of someone else's picture?

He saw these as 'translations' rather than copies, a way of playing a Millet composition in his own key. Painting them kept him company through his year at the Saint-Remy asylum.

What exactly is happening in the picture?

A young man in a blue smock stands inside a barn, both arms raised as he swings a flail down over sheaves of golden threshed grain at his feet. A wooden ladder leans against the wall on the left, and an open doorway behind him frames a strip of pale blue sky. The straw is built up in warm ochre and gold strokes, against which his blue-violet clothing and shadowed face stand out.

Should I order the hand-painted oil or the fine-art print?

The hand-painted oil is brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist, so you get real paint texture and impasto in the straw and the figure's smock. The archival print reproduces the same image with a smooth, even finish at a lower price. Both are made to order once you choose a size and presentation.

What sizes and framing options can I choose, given the picture is a tall, upright composition?

Sizes are offered proportional to the original, keeping this vertical format, and you can have your piece rolled, stretched on a chassis, or finished in a thin or thick frame. Select these options above before ordering.
