Description

Van Gogh’s The Reaper, after Millet, hand-painted in oil

Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889-90, The Reaper is one of the series of ‘translations’ Van Gogh made after prints by Jean-François Millet, the painter of peasant life he revered above all others. He kept Millet’s composition, a peasant cutting corn with a sickle, but reworked it entirely in his own warm, glowing colour and rolling brushwork, treating the copies not as imitations but as heartfelt versions in a new key, made to keep himself company through his year at the asylum.

Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the peasant figure and warm colour keep the feeling of the original.

Where a peasant scene belongs

Grounded and warm, it suits a study, a living room, a dining room or a hallway, and pairs beautifully with wood and warm light.

Choose a hand-painted oil or a fine-art print

Order it as a hand-painted oil for genuine brushwork and impasto relief, finished by an experienced painter and made to order, or as an archival fine-art print for a smooth, even finish at a lower price. Select your size, orientation and framing above; every piece is prepared to your exact specification and inspected before it ships.

The craft

The oil edition of this Van Gogh artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an original Van Gogh composition?

No. It is based on a print by Jean-Francois Millet, the painter of peasant life Van Gogh admired above all others. Van Gogh reworked Millet's design at Saint-Remy in 1889-90, keeping the pose and the sickle but repainting the whole scene in his own warm colour.

Why did Van Gogh copy Millet's compositions?

He treated these copies not as imitations but as heartfelt translations into his own colour and brushwork, and painting them kept him company through his year at the Saint-Remy asylum.

What is actually happening in the painting?

A young reaper in a blue smock is bent low over a wheat field, gripping a sickle with both hands as he cuts through the grain. Behind him the wheat rises in loose strokes of gold and olive, and a flock of dark birds crosses a pale, streaked sky above the field.

What is the difference between the hand-painted oil and the fine-art print?

The hand-painted oil is brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist, so the sickle strokes and the ridges of paint in the reaper's smock keep genuine impasto relief. The fine-art print reproduces the same image with a smooth, even finish at a lower price. Both are made to order.

What sizes and framing options can I choose?

Sizes are scaled proportionally to the original canvas. You can have your piece delivered rolled, stretched on a chassis, or finished with a thin or thick frame. Select your size, orientation and framing above before ordering.
