Description
Van Gogh’s La Berceuse, hand-painted in oil
One of the five versions of La Berceuse Van Gogh painted in 1888-89, this shows Augustine Roulin, wife of the Arles postman, holding the cord of an unseen cradle, set against a wall of vivid green and flowers. Van Gogh designed it to be intensely decorative and consoling, an image of motherhood that might comfort the lonely, and imagined it hung between two of his sunflower canvases.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the flowered ground and calm figure keep the tenderness of the original.
Where a warm portrait belongs
Rich and homely, it suits a living room, a bedroom or a nursery, and pairs beautifully with greenery, warm woods and soft light.
