Painted around Arles in 1888, this landscape sets a stretch of flat, cultivated fields beneath a heavy, moving sky, the clouds massing in blues and greys over the bright land. Van Gogh loved the drama of changing weather over the plain of the Crau, and caught here the charged, expectant moment before a storm in strong colour and swift, decisive strokes.
