Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Digging Up Potatoes, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, the year of The Potato Eaters, this study shows a peasant woman bent low over the dark earth, lifting potatoes from the field. Van Gogh admired the endurance of the country workers and painted them without sentiment, in the heavy browns and earthy greens of his Dutch period, the whole figure fused with the soil she labours over, honest, rooted and monumental.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bent figure and earthy tones keep the weight of the original.
Where a working scene belongs
Its dark, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
