Description
Van Gogh’s The Stevedores in Arles, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Arles in 1888, The Stevedores shows a line of dockers carrying loads up gangplanks from sand barges moored on the Rhône, the town and a glowing sky behind them. Van Gogh admired the rhythm of hard physical work and caught it here against a vivid orange-and-blue sunset, the small dark figures silhouetted against the shining river, a striking picture of labour and light.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the working figures and glowing river keep the drama of the original.
Where a riverside scene belongs
Its warm sunset and dark figures suit a living room, a study or a hallway, and pair well with warm woods and calm interiors.
