Description
Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait without Beard, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in 1889, this is one of Van Gogh’s last self-portraits and the only one in which he appears clean-shaven, having shaved for a visit to his mother. He fixes the viewer with a steady, searching gaze against a cool blue-green ground, the face modelled in firm strokes. Intimate and unflinching, it is among the most personal images he ever made, and one of the most valuable paintings ever sold.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the searching gaze and cool tones keep the intensity of the original.
Where a self-portrait belongs
Direct and arresting, it suits a study, a living room or a hallway, and works beautifully against neutral or darker walls.
