Description
Van Gogh’s The Road Menders, hand-painted in oil
Painted at Saint-Rémy in late 1889, The Road Menders looks down a village boulevard where workmen repair the road beneath a row of enormous, gnarled plane trees, their mottled trunks twisting up the canvas. Van Gogh was captivated by the great trees, which he called colossal, and painted the whole scene, trunks, houses and figures, in rich autumn colour and swirling, energetic strokes.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the great trees and swirling strokes keep the vitality of the original.
Where a street scene belongs
Its rich autumn colour suits a living room, a study or a hallway, and pairs well with warm woods and considered interiors.
