Description
Van Gogh’s Still Life with a Bearded-Man Jar, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this quiet still life groups an old Bartmann or ‘bearded man’ stoneware jug, named for the bearded face moulded on its neck, with other simple earthenware vessels on a table. Van Gogh painted these humble household objects to study form and tone, modelling them in the warm browns and greys of his Dutch period with a plain, honest gravity.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the old jug and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a still life belongs
Its warm, quiet tones suit a kitchen, a dining room or a study, and pair well with wood and warm light.
