Description
Van Gogh’s Peasants Planting Potatoes, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1884, this shows a peasant couple bent to their work in a broad, dark field, the man breaking the ground and the woman dropping in the seed potatoes, a village and low sky behind. Van Gogh admired the shared toil of the country people and painted it without sentiment, in the heavy browns and earthy greens of his Dutch period, a rooted, monumental picture of labour on the land.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the working couple and earthy field keep the weight of the original.
Where a working scene belongs
Its dark, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
