Description
Van Gogh’s The Hill of Montmartre, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1886, this looks up the still half-rural hill of Montmartre, its slopes of kitchen gardens and fences climbing to the old wooden windmills on the ridge, with a few small figures on the paths. Newly arrived from Holland, Van Gogh painted the quiet outskirts of the city as he lightened his palette; here the pale earth, grey sky and weathered mills are worked in soft, muted tones full of air.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the open hill and muted tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a Paris scene belongs
Its soft grey-green tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
