Description
Van Gogh’s Fisherman on the Beach, hand-painted in oil
Painted at The Hague in 1882, this early study shows a fisherman in a sou’wester and heavy oilskins standing on the wide beach at Scheveningen, the grey North Sea and sky behind him. Van Gogh was drawn to the hard, weathered lives of the fishing folk, and painted this lone figure in the sober greys and browns of his early years with a plain, dignified realism.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the standing figure and sober tones keep the character of the original.
Where a coastal figure belongs
Its quiet, weathered tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
