Description
Van Gogh’s Fisherman’s Wife on the Beach, hand-painted in oil
Painted at The Hague in 1882, this early study shows a fisherman’s wife standing on the broad beach at Scheveningen, wrapped against the wind as she looks out to the grey North Sea. A companion to Van Gogh’s studies of the fishing community, it catches the patient, anxious watching of those who wait for the boats, painted in the sober greys and browns of his early years with a quiet, human sympathy.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the standing figure and sober tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a coastal figure belongs
Its quiet, weathered tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
