Description
Van Gogh’s Plaster Statuette of a Female Torso, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Paris in 1887, this is one of a group of studies Van Gogh made of a small plaster cast of a female torso that he kept in his studio to practise modelling form and light. The pale plaster is set against a dark ground and turned this way and that; here the rounded body is built up in cool blues, greens and creams with quick, feeling strokes, a quiet study of shape and shadow.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the plaster form and cool tones keep the character of the original.
Where a study belongs
Quiet and sculptural, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral walls.
