Description
Van Gogh’s Potato Harvest, Five Figures, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Drenthe in 1883, this shows five peasants spread across a wide, dark field, bent to the heavy work of lifting and gathering the potato crop under a low, grey sky. Van Gogh admired the shared toil of the country people and painted them without sentiment, in the sober browns and greys of his early Dutch years; the small labouring figures and the broad, empty land give the scene a rooted, elemental gravity.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the working figures and earthy field keep the weight of the original.
Where a working scene belongs
Its dark, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
