Description
Van Gogh’s Peat Boat with Two Figures, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Drenthe in 1883, this shows a flat barge heaped with cut peat, two figures aboard, resting on the still water of a canal under a wide, low sky. Van Gogh spent some lonely, formative months in this bleak northern moorland, moved by its vast horizons and hard-working people; here the laden boat and empty landscape are worked in the sober browns and greys of his early years with a quiet, melancholy grandeur.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the peat barge and wide land keep the mood of the original.
Where a landscape belongs
Its sober, atmospheric tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
