Description
Van Gogh’s Head of a Peasant Woman with White Cap, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this head study shows a Brabant peasant woman in the crisp white bonnet of the region, her broad, weathered face lit against a dark ground. It is one of the many heads Van Gogh painted in the year of The Potato Eaters, the pale cap ringing brightly against the shadow; modelled in deep earth tones, it has an honest, sympathetic directness.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the white cap and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a head study belongs
Grave and characterful, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
