Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Peeling Potatoes by a Door, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this study shows a peasant woman seated before an open cottage door, peeling potatoes in the daylight that falls across her lap. Van Gogh painted many such quiet scenes of country women at their household tasks in the year of The Potato Eaters, using the doorway light to model the figure; in deep earth tones, it is a plain, tender picture of humble domestic life.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the seated figure and warm light keep the character of the original.
Where a figure study belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or darker walls.
