Description
Van Gogh’s Old Cemetery Tower at Nuenen in the Snow, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in the winter of 1885, this shows the old ruined church tower and its little cemetery under a fall of snow, the dark stone standing stark against the white ground and cold grey sky. Van Gogh was deeply moved by this crumbling tower, a symbol for him of the old peasant faith and the passing of the dead; here the wintry silence and muted tones give the scene a grave, elegiac beauty.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the snowy tower and muted tones keep the mood of the original.
Where a winter scene belongs
Its cool, atmospheric tones suit a study, a hallway or a living room, and pair well with wood and considered interiors.
