Description
Van Gogh’s A Woman with a Spade, Seen from Behind, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this figure study shows a peasant woman bent to her spade, seen from behind as she digs the dark field. Van Gogh made many studies of the stooped, laboring figure, admiring the endurance of the country workers; here, seen from the back, the whole bent form becomes an image of toil itself, modelled in the deep earth tones of his Dutch period with a rugged, honest force.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bent figure and earthy tones keep the weight of the original.
Where a working figure belongs
Strong and grave, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
