Description
Van Gogh’s Two Peasant Women Digging, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this shows two peasant women bent side by side to their spades, digging the heavy soil of a Brabant field. Van Gogh admired the shared toil of the country workers and painted them without sentiment, in the deep browns and earthy greens of his Dutch period; the two stooped figures, fused with the land they work, give the scene a rooted, monumental strength.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the digging figures and earthy field keep the weight of the original.
Where a working scene belongs
Its dark, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and pair well with wood and warm light.
