Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Digging, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this figure study shows a lone peasant woman bent low over her spade, turning the heavy soil of a Brabant field. Van Gogh made many studies of the stooped, digging figure in these years, admiring the dignity of the country workers; here the whole bent form is fused with the dark earth, modelled in deep browns with a rugged, honest force that turns simple toil into something monumental.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the bent figure and earthy tones keep the weight of the original.
Where a working figure belongs
Strong and grave, it suits a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and works well against neutral or darker walls.
