Description
Van Gogh’s Peasant Woman Raking, hand-painted in oil
Painted in Nuenen in 1885, this figure study shows a peasant woman drawing her rake across a broad, dark field, her body leaning into the work. Van Gogh made many studies of the country people at their labour in these years, admiring their endurance; here the sturdy figure and rhythmic gesture are modelled in the deep earth tones of his Dutch period with a rooted, honest strength.
Our version is a hand-painted oil reproduction, brushed onto canvas by a senior studio artist so the raking figure and earthy tones keep the character of the original.
Where a working figure belongs
Its quiet, earthy tones suit a study, a hallway or a considered interior, and work well against neutral or darker walls.
